The World Climate Summit: Our Reminder to Take Action

The earth is “sending a distress signal,” according to the opening statement of the UN climate change meeting in Egypt.

More than 120 world leaders are anticipated to attend the COP27 conference in Sharm el-Sheikh, a tourist town on the Red Sea. Here will kick off two weeks of international climate change negotiations.

Sameh Shoukry, the president of COP27 and the foreign minister of Egypt, urged decision-makers not to let the food and energy crises brought on by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine prevent action on climate change. Everyone in Sharm el-Sheikh has a responsibility to demonstrate that they recognize the gravity of the issues and that they are committed to resolving them. The most recent assessment from the World Meteorological Organization of the UN made clear the necessity for action.

The increase in global temperatures since pre-industrial times has surpassed 1.15C, and the previous eight years are on track to be the warmest on record. The research also warned of the acceleration of sea level rise, record glacier mass losses, and intense heat waves in addition to these significant effects. In light of these findings, world leaders assert that COP27 must serve as the focal point for prompt and trustworthy climate action.

The World Leaders’ Summit will formally launch COP27 on Monday. Heads of state and government will give five-minute statements outlining their goals for the conference during this session.

World leaders will give statements on Monday and Tuesday, and then conference participants will start negotiating. Last year’s Glasgow conference resulted in a number of pledges, including the “phasing down” of coal use, one of the dirtiest fossil fuels, the halting of deforestation by 2030, the reduction of methane emissions by 30% by 2030, and the submission of new climate action plans to the UN. The developing world, which has been most negatively impacted by climate change, is requesting that previous financial commitments be honored.
